Virtues How the Virtues were founded? After Ultima 3: Exodus Richard Garriott was blamed for spreading and corrupting the children's minds with Satan worshipping and things like that. Completely understandable. So in his next Ultima Richard had to make goodness to play the major role. He got the idea for the Principles (Truth, Love & Courage) from a movie called "The Wizard of Oz". There was a Tinman searching for love, a Lion searching for courage and Scarecrow looking for truth. So here were three basic Principles. From them he made the eight Virtues. The Virtue system is quite similar to Buddaism. When RG was creating the Virtues he studied many religions, including Buddaism. From those he made the Virtues. What the Codex symbol means? The Codex symbol symbolises the 8 Virtues of the Avatar and how they are tangled into the 3 Principles. The upper left circle in the middle represents the Principle of Truth, the upper right is Love and the lower circle is Courage. The lines and the little circle in the middle are the 8 Virtues of the Avatar. The line of Honesty touches the circle of Truth, Compassion touches Love and Valor touches Courage. Then the 3 lines which touch 2 circles. Justice touches both Truth and Love, Sacrifice touches Love and Courage and Honor touches Courage and Truth. Spirituality is the little inner circle, which touches all the Principles. And finally Humility, which is the large outer circle, which closes the whole symbol and touches none of the Principles. |
