Who is Richard Garriott?
Richard Garriott (RG) is a computer game creator. He was born in Cambridge, England in 1962. He is a huge fan of D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) games and Tolkien.
He used to do simple games for his own joy with Qbasic. This is how Akalabet (or D&D28b) was born.
Also known as Lord British, Richard has created many computer games, namely the Ultima series. He has also created two companies, Origin Systems, Inc. and Destination Games.
Who is Robert Garriott?
Robet Garriott is Richard's brother. They started Origin Systems, Inc. together and have been creating games since that.
Robert is also part of the new Destination Games staff.
Who is Starr Long?
Starr Long is a producer and works with Destination Games now that Origin died.
He was the producer of Ultima Online and Ultima Online 2 as well as the inspiration for Lord Blackthorn.
Who is Lord British?
Notice that in all Ultimas there reads "A Lord British Production" in the beginning.
Lord British is the nickname of Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima.
Back to Richard's youth. He went to highschool, to the University of Oklahoma . The students who were ahead of him went from room to room giving the new students a nickname. They thought that Richard had a british accent (although according to him he doesn't) and called him British.
That's how he got the name British.
This is the alias he uses in his games.
In Ultima Lord British is a monarch, the ruler of Britannia.
He's whole name is Lord Cantabrigian British, the Bearer of the White Light.
He rised to the throne when he has succesfully defended Sosaria against the attack of evil wizard Mondain.
Who is Shamino Salle Dacil?
Shamino is also one of Richard's names.
Richard joined to a group who pick themselves fantasy names, dress up funnily etc. Richard saw a name of a manufactorer in his bicycle and decided to use it.
But he misspelled a few letters and it became Shamino.
In Ultima Shamino was the king of the Lands of Danger and Despair.
When Mondain's Gem of Immortality was shattered Sosaria was torn into pieces. Shamino was visiting the Lands of Lord British while this happened and couldn't get back to his home.
Later he became a ranger and started to study the Virtue of Spirituality in Skara Brae.
He became one of the most trusted companions of the Avatar when he tried to achieve Avatarhood.
Who is the Avatar?
The Avatar is from our planet, Earth, as many other major characters in Britannia are.
The Stranger was the hero and champion of Lord British in the Age of Darkness when he fought the Triad of Evil which threatened Sosaria.
He was first summoned by Lord British to Sosaria to defeat the evil wizard Mondain, the archfoe of Lord British, and smash Mondain's source of power, the Gem of Immortality.
The Stranger succeeded and destroyed the Gem and killed Mondain.
The Stranger was summoned the second time to defeat Mondain's apprentice and lover, sorceress Minax.
The third time he was summoned Sosaria was under the attack of the hellspawn Exodus, the creation of Mondain and Minax, half machine, half demon. After destroying Exodus the Stranger had destroyed the Triad of Evil and the Age of Darkness was over.
The Stranger was summoned for the fourth time to try to finish the Quest of the Avatar and become the Avatar, a champion and shining example for the people of Britannia in the name of the eight Virtues.
To pass the Quest one had to completely understand and embody all Virtues of the Avatar. He also had to learn the three basic Principles of Truth, Love and Courage where the Virtues are formed. The Avatar also had to learn the source and destination of the Principles: Infinity. Finally he had to travel to the dark Stygian Abyss to pass the test.
The Avatar has been the champion of Lord British and Britannia ever since and he has defended it against enemies that attacked it.
The symbol of the Avatar is a golden Ankh.
Who is the Guardian?
Unfortunedly the birth of the completely positive Avatar caused the birth of a completely negative being. All that negative energy which was thrown away from the Avatar formed the Guardian.
The Guardian, the minion of the Age of Armageddon. The Guardian is vain, greedy, egocentric and malevolent. He thrives only for power and domination.
He entered from one world to another, conquering and pillaging and turning the inhabitants into slaves.
He has his own eight Virtues that his servants should follow, the Virtues of the Guardian.
His last conquest was Britannia. There he and the Avatar finally faced each other.
The Guardian and the Avatar were united by the ritual of Armageddon.
Who is Mondain the Wizard?
Mondain was born in the early years of Sosaria. He studied sorcery but he was too hungry for power.
His father, Wolfgang, the king of a land called Akalabet, had a powerful ruby gem.
Mondain wanted that gem and when his father didn't give it to him he murdered his father and stole the gem. He used the gem against itself and created the Gem of Immortality.
Mondain became a powerful wizard and wanted more power. He created foul monsters to be his army and started to conquer Sosaria.
He took an apprentice, a young and beautiful sorceress Minax, and started to spread his evil to her mind.
His first attack was spoiled by a man called Cantabrigian British. He and his army had to retreat but Mondain wanted revenge.
The second time Mondain threatened Sosaria Cantabrigian British has already risen to the throne and was called Lord British. Lord British summoned a hero from another world to fight Mondain. The Stranger defeated Mondain. He smashed Mondain's Gem of Immortality and Mondain died amongst the remains of his Gem.
Homever, Mondain was not completely dead. His spirit was taken by the Gargoyles to their Shrine of Control, because Mondain represented their Principle of Control.
In his hunger for more power Mondain had lost control of himself. That caused his death.
In the Gargoyle Wars Mondain's spirit told the Avatar about the Gargish Virtue of Control, it's meaning and the importance of controlling one's own self.
Who is Minax the Sorceress?
Minax, the apprentice of Mondain the Wizard, became bitter and wanted to revenge for the death of her master and lover. She created an army and travelled back in time to early Earth.
The Stranger had to go back in time to kill Minax and remove her threat. He slaid Minax with the Quicksword Enilno and returned back to his own time.
The Gargoyles took Minax' spirit from the Void and placed it to their Shrine of Passion. She represented their Principle of Passion.
Minax had died because she was overhelmed by her passion.
In the Gargoyle Wars Minax' spirit told the Avatar about the Gargish Virtue of Passion, it's meaning and how important it is not to let your feelings and passions to direct the course of your actions.
Who is the hellspawn Exodus?
Exodus was the creation of Mondain and Minax.
Exodus was a mixture of ethereal being and a magical mechanism. The living portion, Exodus' Psyche, was composed of it's ambitions, desires, curiosity, in total it's personality.
The Core was the receptacle of Exodus' memories and mental force. The Core was Exodus' way to communicate with this world. It was located in the Castle of Fire in the mountain island called the Isle of Fire, which rose from the sea just east of Britain.
Exodus' Psyche was almost like a parasite, feeding off the world around and pepositing what it gained within the Core.
The Core of Exodus was destroyed by the Stranger with the Cards of Moon, Sol, Life and Death. Exodus' Psyche was taken by the Gargoyles to their Shrine of Diligence, which Exodus represented.
Exodus forgot his original goal and tried to gain everything.
In the Gargoyle Wars Exodus' Psyche told the Avatar about the Gargish Virtue of Diligence, it's meaning and the importance of a clear goal.
Who is Lord Blackthorn?
Starr Long, alias Lord Blackthorn, is one of Richard's good friends.
He was a worker of Origin Systems, Inc. until he was laid off by Electronic Arts when Origin died. Now he is working for Destination Games, the new company of Richard Garriott.
In Ultima Lord Blackthorn was a good friend of Lord British.
When he left to explore the newly founded Underworld in Ultima 5 he left Blackthorn to rule.
Homever Blackthorn was possessed and corrupted by three evil beings called the Shadowlords. He made himself the tyrant of Britannia while Lord British himself was imprisoned inside the Dungeon Doom by the Shadowlords.
Blackthorn turned the eight Virtues into Laws and people had to obey them or face the consequences. He also founded the Oppression to keep order in Britannia.
The Avatar freed Lord British and Blackthorn was sent into exile.
He ended up to Serpent Isle where he lived and studied at the library of the Monk Isle for some time.
He returned to Britannia when the Guardian had conquered it. He became the leader of the Wyrmguard, an organization similar to the Oppression.
He was killed by Lord British in the bottom of dungeon Abyss in a fight.
Who is the Time Lord?
Time Lord resides in the Void. He travels through time and space taking care of it. He ensures that time flows smoothly in space.
When the Stranger tried to rid the world of the evil hellspawn Exodus he asked help from the Time Lord. Next time the Stranger met Time Lord when he tried to stop the Guardian's first invasion of Britannia. The Guardian has chained Time Lord to the Shrine of Spirituality in the Void. Still he was able to help the Avatar to destroy the three Generators of the Guardian.
Most likely Time Lord and the seer Hawkwind are the same person. Hawkwind was the seer of Lord British. He helped the Stranger to pass the Quest of the Avatar.
Next time Hawkwind appeared to help the Avatar to Britannia to defeat the Guardian.
